Former Trump administration aide Sarah Matthews says she heard “troubling stories” about Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) years before explosive allegations of abuse involving his former wife and daughter spilled out into the public — and even warned her own mother against working for him.

Matthews, who served as a White House deputy press secretary during President Donald Trump’s first term, revealed Friday in The Bulwark that her mother was invited to interview for a position with the Trump-backed MAGA Republican in 2022.
“I advised her not to do it,” Matthews said. “I did not know him well, but by the time he ran for Congress, I had heard troubling stories about his alleged treatment of women.”
“The allegations facing Miller now are even more disturbing,” the former Trump official added Friday.
Matthews also unleashed venom on Republican leaders, who she criticized for embracing Trump despite years of mistreatment of women.

“What began as a political bargain became a morally rotten culture,” she wrote, adding that the party has become “corrupted.”
She bolstered her claim in The Bulwark by pointing out that House Speaker Mike Johnson recently endorsed Miller’s reelection and called him a “great member of Congress” with “some issues in his personal life.”
“As Johnson sees it, being accused of domestic violence, child abuse, and drug use doesn’t actually diminish your effectiveness as a lawmaker,” Matthews concluded in her piece. “Setting examples for decency and good character is peripheral, maybe even irrelevant, possibly even deleterious to the job.”
