Donald Trump Jr.’s wife tried to dismiss questions about a lavish gift from a Russian oligarch — but ended up confirming the central allegation, according to a new analysis.

The Guardian’s Adam Gabbatt examined Bettina Trump’s response to reports that Umar Kremlev, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, paid for two nights of the couple’s wedding celebrations.
“Bettina Trump, Trump Jr’s new wife, attempted some PR damage control on her Instagram on Tuesday, but kind of botched it,” Gabbatt wrote. “She decried ‘fake news’ before going on to confirm that, yep, Kremlev did pay for two nights of celebrations.”
Kremlev reportedly covered the cost of a private island and an elaborate fireworks display for the newlyweds and their guests. ProPublica described the “extraordinary development” as a member of Putin’s circle financing the president’s son while gaining close access to the Trump family.
Gabbatt noted Wednesday that Don Jr. remains deeply involved in his father’s political operation, including reportedly helping select administration officials.

“That influence makes it extra concerning that Kremlev has managed to develop such a close relationship with Trump Jr.” he wrote.
Bettina Trump insisted that “sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift,” while President Donald Trump dismissed the controversy as “not a big deal.”
But Gabbard rejected that defense.
“As tempting as it might be to accept a Russian oligarch’s offer to help pay for napkins and forks and knives, people might have some questions – especially if your dad is the president of the United States,” he concluded.
