A Trump loyalist tapped to lead a sprawling Justice Department investigation into the president’s political adversaries abruptly resigned Thursday amid reported frustration over his work.

Joe diGenova submitted his resignation to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, ABC News first reported. It comes as “growing frustrations” among President Donald Trump and senior Justice Department officials spilled out over the Florida-based “grand conspiracy” investigation.
CNN’s Evan Perez reported Thursday that diGenova promised when he arrived in April that charges could come within 30 days. But the investigation became more complicated, sparking clashes between diGenova and his supervisors in Washington.
“Joe diGenova was going big with this investigation and still had nothing to show for it,” Perez said. “That’s the reason why, in the end, he was pressured to resign.”

DiGenova confirmed his departure but declined to discuss the reports of any internal disagreements.
“It was an honor and privilege to serve the president and the department,” he told CNN. The investigation reportedly targeted prominent Trump critics, including former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey.
